The Avega widows, adoptive mothers to the orphans of the genocide

Immaculate Mukakabera, aged 68, widow since the genocide, in her house of the sector of Gantenga, in Kigali, surrounded by her grand children. To the middle ground, Triphine, aged 25, and her daughter, born only a few months ago, the last of Immaculate’s grand children.
Only two of her seven children survived the genocide. Geraldine, aged 36, the eldest, is also a widow. Both are Avega members.
Immaculate has adopted ten orphans, all relatives from her family or friends. The youngest was then four years old. Triphine is one of them. Her twelve children have since then given birth to six grand children. Nineteen people live in Immaculate Mukakabera’s house.
